My Top Pick
The Harry Potter wand set by Kano is without a doubt my favourite item on my Top 5. I am already a huge fan of the Kano sets so seeing the Harry Potter tie-in blew my mind. Children are given a set of components that they can use to build a Wizard’s Wand, complete with a range of sensors. They can then use Kano’s specially built App to create function for the wand – as a result it will react to the movements your child makes whilst holding the hardware, amazing! Furthermore, this Kano set is a really fantastic way to way to introduce some of the key concepts of development, including lot’s of if/then statements driven through an easy to follow drag & drop language. In conclusion, it makes the introduction to code entertaining whilst highly educational.

What are STEM Toys?
STEM relates to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics consequently STEM Toys are those that encourage an exploration of these fields of study. STEM toys and gadgets often include those that seek to engage children through practical play leading to learning. The slime craze is a good, recent example of this. Children buying slime kits are sometimes presented with the scientific reason behind the reactions rather than just packets of Borax. Likewise, LEGO has long been a young engineer’s first glimpse of structural load. The conversations you have with your little ones should encourage a sense of learning during these play sessions.
